Veteran Swans defender signs new AFL deal

Sydney have agreed to a one-year contract extension with veteran defender Heath Grundy, who reached the 250-game AFL milestone in June.

Veteran Sydney defender Heath Grundy has joined Jarrad McVeigh in signing a new deal to play on with the Swans next season.

The key defender will extend his AFL career into a 15th season after signing a new contract on Friday.

Grundy, who will turn 33 next year, has played 254 AFL games including the 2012 grand final win since joining the Swans as a rookie in 2005.

The South Australian has been a stalwart in Sydney's back half but his chances of playing on next season looked slim when he was dropped to the NEAFL earlier this year.

"I'm pretty stoked to finally get it done and looking forward to another year of footy," Grundy said.

"You never know how long your career goes for and to get another year ... I'm extremely happy, and hopefully the club is as well.

"I think I can still contribute to the side and still play some of my best footy."

McVeigh ended speculation about his playing future when the 318-game veteran signed a one-year deal on Thursday, with ruckman Sam Naismith also agreeing to a new contract this week.

Grundy took a break from playing after a loss to Essendon in round 19 to deal with a mental health issue.

However, he returned to the line-up for the round 23 clash against Hawthorn and is in the frame to play the 19th final of his career when the Swans take on GWS in an elimination final next week.

"Heath has been such a reliable and valuable member of our team for a long time now and it's great he'll be playing on again in 2019," Sydney football chief Tom Harley said.

"He's an outstanding club man, a premiership player and a key member of our backline. We look forward to him continuing his career into a 15th year."
