Veteran Swans trio hurt in AFL upset loss

Sydney veterans Kieren Jack, Jarrad McVeigh and Dan Hannebery have all suffered injuries in the AFL club's upset loss to Geelong.

AFL premiership contenders Sydney are counting the cost of a 12-point upset loss to Geelong, with veterans Kieren Jack, Jarrad McVeigh and Dan Hannebery all suffering injuries.

McVeigh broke his collarbone late in the final quarter at the SCG on Thursday night and will undergo surgery, while Kieren Jack hurt his knee in the first quarter and is likely to spend a month on the sidelines.

The club expect scans to reveal the damage to Jack's medial ligament.

Hannebery tweaked his calf early in the contest and was deployed as a forward for the rest of the game.

"I don't know whether Hanners has definitely torn it," coach John Longmire told reporters.

"He was affected by it, so we had to push him forward.

"With Kieren, we're not sure what grade medial it is.

"Macca obviously has to have an operation.

"We lost a few tonight."

Lewis Melican, who was close to returning from a recurring hamstring injury that has prevented him playing AFL since round three, irritated that injury at training this week.

Melican will now be racing the clock to be fit for the finals.

"It's a re-do, so naturally it's going to take longer," Longmire said.

The news is better for Sam Reid (quad), Tom Papley (hip) and Isaac Heeney (concussion), who could all return against North Melbourne next week.

"Sam's due to play (in the NEAFL) on Saturday, so we'll see how he goes," Longmire said.
