Veterans of the Battle of El Alamein will be honoured as they gather in Canberra to remember their fallen mates 75 years on from the fierce fighting.

Six veterans from the Australian 9th Division have travelled across the country to mark the anniversary of the ferocious battle in the North African desert.

Derek Green, 95, from Queensland, will join Victorians James McCabe, 98, and Jim Price, 96, and West Australians John Wade, 99, Felix Sainsbury, 97, and 95-year-old Sydney Shaw at the Australian War Memorial for the ceremony on Monday afternoon.

The six veterans were part of the Allied attack on the Axis powers led by Germany's 'Desert Fox' General Erwin Rommel in World War II.

The 18,000 soldiers of the Australian 9th Division played a key role in the battle, remembered by British Prime Minister Winston Churchill as the first Allied victory against the Axis forces in the desert.

Victory at El Alamein is widely considered to be the turning point for the Allies in the war in the African theatre of conflict.

More than 2600 Australians were killed in the Battle of El Alamein.
