Vic barber denies fatal stab to heart

A Melbourne man accused of fatally stabbing his neighbour in the heart says the pair had a fight but he did not stab him, a court has heard.

A Melbourne barber accused of murdering his neighbour denies stabbing the victim in the heart during a fight outside his home.

Tony Papadimitriou, 35, appeared at Melbourne Magistrates Court via video link on Monday charged with murdering Donato Galgano, 68, near his barber shop in Preston.

Mr Galgano died on July 10 after he collapsed following an altercation with Papadimitriou.

No one saw the younger man stab Mr Galgano, the defence says.

"There is no doubt there was an altercation but my client denies inflicting (the wound)," defence barrister Adrian Strauch told a committal mention.

There is CCTV footage of Papadimitriou leaving his home shortly before witnesses saw him and Mr Galgano together but no footage of the confrontation, he said.

Defence will question six witnesses about Mr Galgano's final moments, including a pathologist who performed the autopsy.

Papadimitriou will return to court on March 7 for a three-day committal hearing.
