Vic beach reopens after shark sighting

A two-metre shark was sighted near a popular Victorian beach on Boxing Day, forcing lifeguards to shut the beach for four hours.

A Victorian beach closed for four hours after the sighting of a two-metre shark was reopened by 3pm after a surveillance patrol gave the all clear.

Lifeguards were on patrol at Fairhaven Beach until 5.30pm on Monday as usual, but steady rain that began falling after a cool change probably kept swimmers away.

A 2.5m shark was also spotted at Patterson Lakes on the eastern side of Port Phillip Bay about 11.30am on Monday.

A surveillance helicopter was able to herd the shark further out into the bay.

The closure of Fairhaven Beach comes after 32 sharks were spotted in waters near Anglesea and Fairhaven on Sunday.

The sharks, ranging in size from 1.5m to 3.5m, were most likely bronze whalers, Life Saving Victoria general manager Paul Shannon said.

Helicopters will be deployed again on Tuesday to patrol popular beaches as humid and hot conditions continue.

"We've got constant surveillance from the towers and no doubt as per today, because it has been a bit of a hotspot, the Westpac Rescue Helicopter will probably spend a little bit more due diligence around this area to make sure it's safe," Mr Shannon told AAP.

Fisheries Victoria and Life Saving Victoria are urging swimmers to visit patrolled beachers and stay between the flags to keep safe during the summer.

Swimmers should also keep away from large schools of fish, seals or wildlife behaving erratically.

Premier Daniel Andrews on Monday told reporters he had talked with Emergency Management Commissioner Craig Lapsley, who was working with Life Saving Victoria and monitoring the shark sightings.

"Obviously this is not something we've had to deal with all that often," Mr Andrews said.

Life Saving Victoria is patrolling 57 locations across Victoria between 10am and 6pm.
