Vic budget: big spend on cops and courts

The Victorian budget tackles a key election issue of law and order with big investments in the justice system and police.

VICTORIAN BUDGET: LAW AND ORDER

* $689.5 million to build a 700-bed maximum-security men's prison at Lara

* $160 million to increase the number of beds at Malmsbury and Parkville youth detention centre

* $129 million to create a new bail and remand court, employ 18 additional magistrates, two new County Court judges and a Supreme Court judge

* $119 million to employ more police prosecutors and staff for the new bail court

* $91 million to enhance security across Victorian prisons

* $41.4 million for a new East Melbourne police station

* $37.3 million for Victoria Legal Aid

* $25 million for local crime prevention

* $25 million to provide Victoria Police with long-arm firearms

* $24.2 million to tackle cybercrime and child porn

* $21 million to implement terrorism and violent extremism prevention and response measures

* $20 million to acquire land to redevelop Werribee and Bendigo justice precincts

* $10.1 million to support victims of crime

* $9.4 million for mobile policing units
