Firefighters have downgraded an emergency alert for a bushfire in the Trawalla area in central Victoria.

The Country Fire Authority (CFA) has issued a watch and act message for residents in Chepstowe, Mount Emu, Mena Park and Brewster.

The fire is travelling in a southwesterly direction in the area between Trawalla Road and the Beaufort-Carngham Road and spans about 250 hectares.

There is no threat to communities but residents in the area should continue to stay informed and monitor conditions, the CFA says.

Smoke may be visible from nearby communities and roads.

A total fire ban has been declared for Tuesday in seven of Victoria's nine fire districts: Mallee, Wimmera, south west, northern country, north central, central, and West and South Gippsland.
