Vic bushfire towns get more aid

Bushfire-affected communities in Victoria will receive additional help from the state government following the Christmas Day blaze.

Victims of a dangerous bushfire that ravaged two Victorian holiday towns will be given additional support by the state government.

The Andrews government announced on Wednesday that bushfire-affected communities will be exempt from the landfill levy, which costs $60.52 per tonne of industrial waste, and up to $250 per tonne of prescribed industrial waste such as asbestos and contaminated soils.

This means that property owners at towns such as Wye River, which lost 98 homes, and Separation Creek, which lost 18, will not have to pay thousands of dollars of levy costs.

It is estimated that between 30 and 60 tonnes of waste will need to be removed from each property affected by the 2300-hectare Jamieson Track blaze, which would normally cost about $5000.

The Andrews government will also contribute an extra $250,000 to hire two more recovery workers to help the Colac Otway Shire Council deal with those in need of bushfire support.
