Ten years after Cindy Gambino's three sons were murdered when their father drove his car into a dam, a Victorian court has formally approved an order for her to be paid compensation.

Robert Farquharson appeared in the Victorian Supreme Court on Monday via videolink from prison where he is serving a life sentence for killing Jai, 10, Tyler, 7, and Bailey Farquharson, 2, on Father's Day in 2005.

Justice Lex Lasry formally approved orders relating to a compensation claim from Farquharson's ex-wife Cindy Gambino, but the details remain confidential.

Barrister Adam Hill, acting for Ms Gambino, would not comment on the details of the claim outside court, other than to say the matter had been resolved.

He had told the court during an earlier hearing there was a finite pool of money available.

The ultimate outcome is that pool, Mr Hill said during an earlier hearing in June.

Farquharson was ordered to pay his ex-wife $225,000 in 2009 after being found guilty of the boys' murder in 2007 but the payment order was overturned when his conviction was quashed on appeal in December 2009.

He was again found guilty in 2010 and sentenced to life with a minimum of 33 years.

He was returning home from an access visit when he drove his car off the Princes Highway and into a dam near Winchelsea.

While he swam free, his sons drowned.

His trial heard the murders were to punish Ms Gambino.

After a subsequent application to appeal was denied by the full bench of the High Court in 2013, Ms Gambino filed another compensation claim.

Ms Gambino was not in court for the hearing on Monday.
