Drought-stricken areas in western Victoria could get some water relief with a study looking at extending a pipeline in the Wimmera-Mallee region.

Premier Daniel Andrews announced $1 million for a feasibility study to extending the Wimmera Mallee pipeline further and replacing an open water channel.

"This feasibility study will examine the potential to extend the Wimmera Mallee Pipeline to deliver water security to more of Ararat rural city and West Wimmera shire and better secure the future of local farming," Mr Andrews said on Wednesday.

The pipeline was completed in 2010 and replaced 17,500km of earthen channels with more than 9000km of pressurised pipeline to provide continuous water supply to 9000 farms and 34 townships.

Mr Andrews' two-day tour of drought-affected areas started in Ararat on Wednesday morning with the opening of an outdoor pool.
