Victorian children with severe epilepsy have been given imported cannabis oil ahead of locally-produced oil being available later this year.

Twenty-nine children with the condition have been given a trial of Canadian-imported cannabidiol oral solution, with locally-grown oil expected to be available later in 2017.

"This is too important to wait. That's why we're doing everything we can to make sure those families in the greatest need can access this life changing treatment for their kids" Victorian Premier Daniel Andrews said in a statement on Wednesday.
