Vic farmer on jet ski rescues flood kids

A Victorian farmer on a jet ski has rescued two children from a car caught in flood waters.

A farmer on a jet ski rescued a dad and his two young girls after their car was caught in fast-moving flood waters in Victoria.

Mick Morrison was driving near his Marlo farm in Gippsland early on Thursday when he saw the man's car stranded in water in a bend in the road.

"I thought about driving in there but then we thought if I hook onto him to tow him out, if something happens I'm going to get towed in too," Mr Morrison told AAP.

He went home and came back on his jet ski, which could run in extremely shallow water.

One by one he rescued the girls and their dad from the water, which was about one metre deep and moving quickly.

"I think they (the girls) were in more of a state of shock when I first got there, they were really worried," he said.

Mr Morrison said it was "pretty cool" being able to ride across the flooded landscape.

"You're riding a jet ski on a main road. It's not everyday you do that," he said.

Another man was rescued from neck-deep water after he had to climb on top of his car on Wednesday night.

He narrowly avoided drowning after he lost his footing while he waited on top of his car in a paddock in Mossiface.

"(He) managed to climb onto the roof of his vehicle to await assistance from emergency services, but lost his footing after the rapidly rising water reached his neck," Victoria Police said.

The floods came after heavy rain fell across East Gippsland on Tuesday and Wednesday, with Bairnsdale receiving 86mm and some isolated parts getting close to 200mm in the past 48 hours.

Major flood warnings are in place for the Snowy, Mitchell, Latrobe and Tambo rivers.

The SES says it has received reports of boats escaping their moorings as rivers throughout the region rise to warning levels.

Locals have been advised never to walk, ride or drive through floodwater, and to stay away from waterways and stormwater drains.

Showers have been forecast for west and south Gippsland for Friday.
