A bushfire is burning out of control towards a small community in Victoria's Gippsland Lakes.

The 15-hectare blaze is in scrub four kilometres southwest of Ocean Grange and slowly moving towards the small settlement.

A watch and act alert was issued on Saturday evening.

If control lines don't hold, the blaze is expected to affect Ocean Grange overnight.

Department of Environment and Primary Industries (DEPI) incident controller Peter West said the fire behaviour was dying down but crews would remain overnight.

"We're hoping fire conditions ease overnight," Mr West said.

"The fire is still going and control lines have been pushed in front by the wind."

Mr West said crews were confident of controlling the blaze, and would maintain vigilance.

The holiday spot is accessible by boat only and has beach shacks away from where the blaze is burning, he says.

Residents have been told to prepare their properties and have plans in place.

Ocean Grange residents are advised to seek shelter.

Firefighters are in the area ready to offer assist.

The land where the fire is burning is managed by the DEPI.
