Vic grandfather, 99, to be tried for arson

A 99-year-old Melbourne nursing home resident will stand trial for a single charge of arson after denying he set fire to a house.

A 99-year-old Melbourne nursing home resident will stand trial for allegedly setting fire to his relatives' house.

The grandfather, who cannot be named, faced the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Thursday on a single charge of criminal damage by arson.

He is alleged to have set fire to the Doncaster house of two family members in September last year.

When asked to enter a plea through a Cantonese interpreter, the man said: "I do not know the law. I will not plead guilty today."

Magistrate Donna Bakos extended the bail of the Donvale man, who must reside at his nursing home.

He will return to the Victorian County Court on Friday for a directions hearing.
