Vic Hernes Oak grassfire stopped

A grassfire is no longer threatening a number of townships in Victoria's Latrobe Valley.

A grassfire in Victoria's Latrobe Valley is no longer threatening homes.

The CFA had issued an emergency warning for Hernes Oak, Yallourn, Yallourn Heights and the bigger town of Newborough in the state's southeast around 5.30pm (AEDT) on Friday.

But firefighters managed to stop the spread of the Hernes Oak grassfire with authorities downgrading warnings to a watch and act by 9pm.

Officials, however, say leaving remains the safest option since conditions may change.
