Victoria's Sam Harper has spent the night in hospital after suffering a nasty head blow while wicketkeeping in the Sheffield Shield match against South Australia on Saturday at Adelaide Oval.

Scans have cleared him of any bleeding or bone damage but he will take no further part in the match.

Harper was struck by the follow-through of Jake Lehmann's bat, while standing up at the stumps just before lunch on day two.

Harper was in some distress as he was led from the field with the assistance of medical staff, and an extended lunch break was taken after the injury.

While replacement players are not permitted, Seb Gotch will travel to Adelaide to act as a substitute fielder.

Victoria ended the day at 3-198 in their second innings, with a handy 204-run advantage over South Australia.
