Vic koala rescuers fear worst

Wildlife rescuers are waiting to go into the Victorian bushfire zone and start assessing the impact on native fauna.

Wildlife rescuers fear up to 70 per cent of animals they find in the wake of the Victorian bushfires will have to be euthanised.

Jirrahlinga Koala Wildlife Sanctuary director Tehree Gordon says she bases the estimate on her experience going back before the state's horrific Ash Wednesday fires.

Ms Gordon says rescuers anticipate some awful days ahead.

"There will be heartache, there will be tears but at all times we will do what's best for the animal," she told AAP.

It may still be some time before rescue work can start.
