Seventeen kayakers have been rescued as strong winds blew them away from a Melbourne beach.

The kayakers were caught out when the wind strengthened and changed to an easterly at Frankston about 3pm on Tuesday, blowing them more than 150 metres from the shore.

Three kayaks had capsized and one had sunk when life savers on personal water craft came to the rescue, taking all 17 to shore one by one.

Life Saving Victoria has warned water lovers to check weather conditions before setting out.
