Vic looks at smokes ban for outdoor dining

Victorian Health Minister David Davis says the government is looking closely at banning smoking in outdoor dining areas.

The Victorian government says it is looking closely at banning smoking in outdoor dining areas.

Health Minister David Davis says the government is considering a smoking ban outside pubs, clubs and bars, with further announcements due in months.

"The government is certainly assessing the information on outdoor areas. It's one of the list that is being looked at closely," he told reporters on Tuesday.

"There are a number of others that are also in that list.

"We will be taking further steps in forthcoming months and making further announcements."

The government will introduce legislation in the next few months to ban smoking at children's playgrounds, skate parks and children's sporting events.

It follows laws introduced last year banning smoking between the flags on patrolled beaches and earlier moves to ban smoking in cars and restrictions at the point of sale.

Opposition Leader Daniel Andrews said politics should be put to one side when considering tightening tobacco control.

But he said further restrictions such as smoking bans in outdoor dining areas require lots of consultation and hard work.

"I just think its unlikely this government's going to be able to do more tobacco control reform because they've not done the hard work to make the case, to build the consensus and to write the detailed laws needed," he told reporters.

"Whether people see that as dragging your heels or not, well I think the Victorian community can make up their own mind."
