A man has been charged after handing himself in to police after hitting a teenage cyclist and leaving him for dead on a Melbourne road.
Ben Tyrrell, 18, suffered serious head injuries when he was hit by a Jeep 4WD while cycling near the intersection of Dryburgh Street and Dynon Road in West Melbourne just before 1am on Friday.
The driver of the Jeep got out and saw the young man on the ground severely injured but drove off, police say.
The 25-year-old Footscray man handed himself into police just after 5pm and has since been charged over the crash.
He has been charged with three offences, including failing to stop, failing to render assistance and failing to report to police.
He was bailed to appear at the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Monday.
Ben's father, Kevin Tyrrell, says his son was working at a construction site just 100 metres down the road from the accident and had gone out for a drink with his boss after work.
Ben remains in a critical condition in Royal Melbourne Hospital.
