Vic man charged with impersonating cops

A Victorian man has been accused of impersonating police over several months.

A wannabe cop is facing a future as a convicted crim after allegedly impersonating Victorian police over several months.

The 52-year-old Winchelsea man has been charged with impersonating a police officer, handling stolen goods and possessing an imitation firearm after he was arrested by real officers on Sunday.

Police stopped a white commodore sedan on the Geelong Freeway about 4am on Sunday and allegedly found police-related items, leading to the search of a Winchelsea home.

They say the man had been impersonating officers in Geelong, Werribee and Melton over the past few months.

He has been bailed to appear in Werribee Magistrates' Court on 18 March.
