A man has been charged with attacking a fellow resident at a Melbourne boarding house with a meat cleaver and causing injuries which penetrated to the bone.

Ben Lam, 30, appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday charged with four counts of assault following a fight in Sunshine earlier this week.

Lam allegedly attacked another man with a 30 centimetre-long meat cleaver, causing cuts to the man's head and left arm as he tried to defend himself during an argument on Thursday, the court was told.
