A man who died following a car crash in Melbourne's north didn't die as a result of the car accident but had "suspicious" injuries inconsistent with the crash, police say.

The man died following a minor crash in Glenroy about 12.20pm but Senior Sergeant Tim Cron from Fawkner police says his injuries, which have been reported to be stab wounds, were not consistent with the crash.

Sen-Sgt Cron said he could not confirm the nature of the injuries or when and where they occurred but denied initial reports that the death was related to a possible road rage incident.

"I can't say what the injuries are but I can say they did not occur after the accident," he told reporters at the scene.

"He has injuries that we say are suspicious. That's why the homicide squad is investigating and we expect to be at the scene for some time," he said.

Paramedics were on the scene when the man died.

Homicide detectives have interviewed numerous witnesses in the area, a residential zone that's close to a school and a shopping strip, and expect to be at the scene for most of the night.

They have no suspects yet, and Sen-Sgt Cron said he could not identify the victim or say if he was known to police.
