A 41-year-old Melbourne man has had his car impounded after he was found driving almost 70km/h over the speed limit with an unrestrained child on board.

A man has been nabbed speeding at 148km/h with an unrestrained two-year-old child in the car in northern Melbourne.

Police allegedly detected the Holden Caprice travelling almost 70km/h over the limit in an 80km/h zone on the Western Ring Road at Jacana about 12.20am (AEDT) on Saturday morning.

They intercepted the vehicle and discovered the two-year-old child was unrestrained.

The vehicle was immediately impounded for 30 days under the hoon legislation.

The 41-year-old Coolaroo man is expected to be charged on summons with speeding, driving at a dangerous speed, having an unregistered vehicle and having an unrestrained child in the car.
