Vic man to stand trial over DNA link

A former Victorian farm worker will stand trial over rape allegations from almost 30 years ago after police linked his DNA to samples from the crime scene.

A former Victorian farm worker will stand trial over the rapes of two women after police linked his DNA to the crimes almost 30 years later.

Anthony James Pitt, 58, pleaded not guilty to 15 charges of rape and assault when he appeared before the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

It's alleged Pitt raped one woman in Mildura in 1987 before raping a 17-year-old girl in Frankston a year later.

His DNA was linked to forensic samples taken from the victims' clothing by police in 2012, according to a police summary.

In June this year Pitt was charged with three counts of rape, two counts of indecent assault and multiple charges of assault and causing serious injury.

He also faces two charges of threatening to kill over allegations he told the victims "if you tell anyone or report me to the police I will kill you" after they had been raped.

At the time of the first assault, Pitt was 29 and lived in a caravan on a Mildura farm with his wife and two young daughters.

In 1988 it's believed Pitt and his family were living in Nhill, halfway between Adelaide and Melbourne.

Pitt's third child was born two-and-half weeks after the 17-year-old was raped in March 1988, the police summary notes.

Both victims were attacked as they were walking on the street and dragged into nearby bushes.

The second victim sustained a fractured cheekbone after she was punched in the face during the rape.

Pitt, who waived his right to a committal hearing on Wednesday, has been ordered to stand trial in July 2016.
