Up to 20,000 people attended a rally in Melbourne to show their support of marriage equality and the 'yes' campaign in the upcoming postal survey on legalising same sex marriage.

Thousands of supporters marched through the CBD for the rally with an illegal mass marriage ceremony conducted after speeches from comedians and politicians.

Equal Love campaigner Ali Hogg said more than 20,000 people had come to Melbourne to show their support for same sex marriage.

"It's an amazing turnout...we are so elated," Ms Hogg said.

Federal Labor frontbencher Mark Dreyfus said it was just a matter of time until marriage equality is achieved in Australia.

"It's going to happen. It's either going to happen through this process, or whatever process by a private member's bill," he told the crowd.

However, the Archbishop of Melbourne Denis Hart has written an open letter urging Catholics to vote against gay marriage.

"We sincerely believe that there is a core and fundamental wisdom and truth in the traditional definition and understanding of marriage that should not be ignored and is worth keeping for the health and future of our society," he wrote.

A team of artists are also painting a pro-same-sex marriage mural in a Melbourne laneway over the weekend to encourage people to vote yes in the postal plebiscite.

The Australian Electoral Commission released figures on Friday showing 90,000 new voters had registered ahead of the survey.
