Victoria's CFA board has been sacked and Emergency Services Minister Jane Garrett has resigned after they refused to support a controversial union pay deal.

"This evening I have advised the CFA board that the government has begun proceedings to dismiss it," Ms Garrett's replacement, James Merlino, said on Friday night.

The board is being sacked after it repeatedly refused to sign the agreement with the United Firefighters Union.

A last-minute legal injunction meant the CFA couldn't actually put the deal to a vote before June 22 but the government was unmoved.

"If they're unwilling to do that (back the deal), we'll have a new board, and we'll have a new board in good time," Premier Daniel Andrews told reporters earlier on Friday.
