A motorcyclist appears to have been deliberately knocked off his bike and then stabbed in Melbourne's west.

Police believe the Tarneit man, 33, was knocked off his bike by a car before the occupants of the car got out, stabbed the motorcyclist and fled from the scene in Melton South on Wednesday morning.

The victim made his way to a nearby hospital before paramedics transferred him in a stable condition to Footscray Hospital, Ambulance Victoria said.
