Vic murder case unsolved a year on

A Melbourne man shot dead by an intruder could have been targeted because of a recently built hydroponic setup, police say.

The murder of a Melbourne man who was shot dead in front of his pregnant wife and young son a year ago, remains unsolved.

Toan Truong, 43, was fatally shot in his Sunshine West Home in the early hours of February 3 last year when he confronted an intruder.

Police believe Mr Truong could have been targeted by two men seen driving around the area at the time of his murder because of a secret hydroponic cannabis setup he had recently constructed in an upstairs bedroom.

His wife, who was eight months pregnant at the time, was unaware of the hydroponic crop as Mr Truong had told her not to go upstairs because he wanted the baby's room to be a surprise.

She has since given birth to a baby girl.

Police have again released an image of a man they believe was at the property as well as pictures of cars seen in the area that night.

Homicide Squad Detective Inspector Michael Hughes hopes the renewed plea for public help on the anniversary of Mr Truong's murder will bring some closure to his grieving family.

"Someone out there knows who is responsible for Toan's murder and we are urging them to come forward and help police," he said on Wednesday.

Previously Mr Truong's brother Tai told the media his brother had paid with his life for a "stupid mistake".

He said the family was shocked to learn the engineer was growing drugs in his home.
