Two men charged with attempted murder over an incident in 2011 have been remanded in custody.

Wayne Vitale, 25, of Hampton Park, and Craig Vitale, 27, of Dingley Village, are charged with one count each of armed robbery, theft, conduct endangering life, attempted murder, intentionally causing serious injury, and recklessly causing serious injury.

The charges relate to an incident in Kingsville in October 2011.

Police say two men, one armed with a firearm, went into a shop in Geelong Road and threatened staff before firing a shot into the cash register in an attempt to steal cash, then took alcohol and fled the scene.

The men had fired a shot at a man in his 50s in a nearby stationary vehicle, wounding his hand and arm, it will be alleged.

Wayne, dressed in a black T-shirt and dark pants, briefly appeared in the Melbourne Magistrates Court on Saturday but was not required to speak.

His lawyer told the court he had been diagnosed with depression and requested a psychiatric nurse see him while he was in custody.

Craig did not appear in court.

The relationship of the men, who bear the same surname, is unclear but three family members were in court during the hearing.

Neither applied for bail and they were remanded in custody to appear at the same court on Tuesday for a filing hearing.
