Global convenience chain 7-Eleven has been told to clean up a fuel leak at one of its Melbourne petrol stations after failing to act for almost two years.

The company has been fined more than $7700 after hydrocarbons were found in groundwater beneath the suburban Newport fuel station and were not removed in a timely manner, Victoria's environment authority says.

EPA Victoria says 7-Eleven knew weathered petrol was in groundwater at the premises in July 2015 but "had failed to undertake any form of clean up".

A tip-off to EPA's pollution hotline in February this year prompted the investigation.

The chain must now provide the authority with an approved interim clean-up plan completed by an independent environmental auditor.

The company must also find out the extent of the contamination at the site and check all underground tanks for leaks.

7-Eleven has been contacted for comment.
