Vic police ditch fax machines for iPhones

Victoria's police will soon have iPhones and a new app to quickly share real-time information about crimes while out in the field.

There will soon be an "end to fax machines" at Victoria Police as the force readies itself to join the 21st century with new technology on iPhones.

They will go mobile in the middle of the year with iPhones, iPads and a new app rolled out that will allow officers to carry out ID checks and report crimes while on the move.

The new technology, being dubbed the "the biggest technological change to frontline policing since radio systems in patrol cars" is costing the government $50 million over the next five years.

Assistant Commissioner Jack Blayney said the technology would allow police to remain out in the field without having to return to the station to file paperwork.

"We can see the end to fax machines within Victoria Police so that we can truly call ourselves a modern police force," Mr Blayney told reporters on Thursday.

"Officers out in the field don't have to go back to their police stations to fill out forms and fax them off."

The devices will allow police to assess any risks that may be in a location and check car registrations, licence details and details about the crims they catch.

They will also receive their tasks from the police control centre.

Motorola will run the new technology, which promises to place real-time information at the fingertips of the state's 10,000 police officers, allowing a faster and more efficient way to share information.

"We will provide Victoria Police with a mobility managed service that is highly secure, reliable and helps to free up more time for frontline police to work in their communities where they are needed most," Motorola managing director Steve Crutchfield said.

The technology has already been rolled out in Queensland but Victoria will have more devices than any other state in the country.
