A prisoner is on the run after he shed his prison clothes and escaped from a minimum security prison north of Melbourne on Friday night.

The low-risk offender, Eray Aslan, 35, escaped from Dhurringile Prison some time between 6pm and 8.30pm (AEST), police say.

Aslan discarded his prison uniform and is wearing street clothes.

A search of the immediate area failed to find the escapee.

Police have released an image of him and believe he may be headed for the Broadmeadows or Roxburgh Park areas.
