An inmate has died in his cell at a privately run Victorian prison.

The 25-year-old man was found shortly before 8am on Monday at the Port Phillip Prison, a Corrections Victoria spokesman said in a statement.

Police and ambulance services were called to the prison.

As with all deaths in custody, the matter will be referred to the coroner who will formally determine a cause of death, the spokesman said.
