Hundreds of residents in Melbourne have spent the day mopping up after violent storms damaged property and caused flash flooding.

A hospital roof collapsed and a university was flooded after an intense downpour dumped 30mm of rain on Melbourne in 30 minutes on Thursday.

The State Emergency Service says it responded to more than 1800 calls for help from noon on Thursday, with 41 people needing to be rescued from cars or buildings that had been inundated by flash floods.

The Alfred hospital suffered a partial roof collapse after a pipe burst but no patients or staff were affected, a hospital spokesman said.

La Trobe University was also badly affected by rainwater, according to staff members.

In West Meadows, 30 residents at a nursing home had to be relocated as the storms moved across the state.

In the meantime, the SES is urging people to stay out of floodwaters and beware of fallen trees and debris.
