Vic senator's Ned Kelly suit sold

Independent senator John Madigan has sold a Ned Kelly suit of armour he made to fund his election campaign.

A hand-forged replica of Ned Kelly's suit of armour has been sold in an eBay auction fundraiser for Victorian independent senator John Madigan.

The suit sold for $2425 after 55 bids about 5.30pm on Friday.

The Ballarat-based former blacksmith agreed to make the suit when a documentary maker invited him to the forge in Hepburn Springs - where the senator had worked - for a bit of filming.

Mr Madigan told AAP on Friday he had sold a similar suit about eight years ago for $4000 and the auction selling price was an indication of how tough times were for many Australians.

He said all of the money would go towards his "bare bones" election campaign and the stunt had attracted plenty of attention.

"I've had a lot of people call into the workshop to have a look, a lot of people have thought it's a novel way (to fundraise)," he said.
