Vic shooting officers 'holding up'

The two police officers stabbed by a Melbourne terror suspect say they appreciate everyone's well wishes and are holding up well.

The two officers stabbed by a Melbourne terror suspect say they are holding up well.

The counter-terrorism officers were stabbed by 18-year-old Numan Haider after arranging to meet him outside Endeavour Hills police station last Tuesday night.

"We would like to thank our family, friends, colleagues and everyone who has helped and supported us through this difficult time," the officers said in a statement on Monday.

"We are both holding up well and appreciate everyone's kind thoughts and well wishes.

"We ask that our privacy is respected while we continue to recover."

The Australian Federal Police officer was stabbed three or four times, in the neck, stomach and head.

The Victoria Police leading senior constable received a slash to his arm before firing a shot that killed Haider.

Victoria Police deputy commissioner Graham Ashton said on Friday the officers were not expecting Haider to act in the manner he did and are devastated he is dead.

"Like everyone else, they're devastated and are upset that this young man felt that he had to take this action."

Police say counter-terrorism officers had been aware of Haider for about three months, and had invited him to the police station after becoming concerned about his behaviour.

Victorian Premier Denis Napthine said he had thanked the officers on behalf of the government and the Australian community.

"I've visited the two police officers and wished them all the very best, and offered our thanks," Dr Napthine told reporters on Monday.

"Those officers are recovering, but they were very seriously injured and their recovery will take some weeks and months."
