Vic shooting victim not intended target

A teenager shot during a drug deal in a Melbourne shopping centre car park was not the intended target, police say.

A teenager has permanent disabilities after he was ambushed, chased and shot at point-blank range when a drug deal in a Melbourne shopping centre car park went wrong.

Victoria Police also say the 19-year-old man was not the shooter's intended victim.

He was shot during an altercation between three carloads of youths at Vermont South Shopping Centre on August 19.

Police on Thursday released CCTV footage showing youths in two of the cars lying in wait for the third car before ambushing and blocking it in.

Detective Senior Sergeant Ian Shepherd says the injured teenager was shot by mistake.

"It certainly was a targeted attack but the person who was shot was an associate of the people who instigated the attack," Det Sen Cons Shepard told reporters on Thursday.

"It's an ambush gone wrong."

Police say the shooter is thought to have been involved in another gun-related attack in Surrey Hills on May 25.

In that Surrey Hills incident, the man brought out a shotgun and fired it at another man during an argument between two groups of people.

The shooter missed.

Police say the same gun was used in both attacks.

Det Sen Sgt Shepard said both incidents were a result of a drug deal, believed to be ice, gone wrong.

The victim is not co-operating with police, he said.
