Senior Victorian school students can now choose a "gender X" box on official documents instead of identifying themselves as male or female.

The Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority made the change for senior secondary students after requests from pupils and schools over the past couple of years.

"I'm told we're talking tens of students (will mark the box), rather than hundreds," VCAA spokesman Alistair King told AAP on Wednesday.
