Vic teen critical after freeway dash

A boy, 14, suffered life-threatening injuries when he was hit by a car while crossing a freeway in Melbourne's west.

A teenage boy is fighting for his life after he was hit by a car when he and a group of friends ran across a Melbourne freeway.

Police believe a group of four youths tried to cross the Western Freeway at Brookfield, near Melton, just after 11pm on Saturday when the 14-year-old was struck by a car.

He suffered life-threatening injuries and was flown to The Alfred hospital where he remains in a critical condition.

The driver, a 47-year-old Ballarat woman, and her son stopped to help and are assisting police.
