A teenage boy is fighting for his life after he was shot in the head in Victoria's Gippsland region in what may have been an accident.

The 17-year-old was injured in Neerim East on Sunday afternoon before he was flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital in a critical condition.

An Ambulance Victoria spokesman said the shooting was "possibly accidental" but police are still working out the details.

"The circumstances are yet to be established and the investigation is ongoing," police said in a statement.

The boy's condition was upgraded from critical to "life threatening" on Sunday night, a police spokeswoman said.
