Vic teen critical after train-car crash

A teenage boy has suffered life-threatening injuries after the car he was in collided with a train at a level crossing in Bairnsdale.

A teenage boy is fighting for life after a car he was travelling in collided with a train at a level crossing in Victoria's east.

The collision happened around 6.30pm on Friday in Bairnsdale, where a Traralgon-bound V-Line train was crossing Ligar Street.

There were no boom gates to bar traffic at the crossing, Victoria Police said, just light and sound signals.

The boy, 17, and the driver, a 19-year-old woman, were trapped in the car for an hour before emergency services were able to free them from the wreckage.

The boy has been flown to the Royal Melbourne Hospital and is being treated for injuries to his head, chest and pelvis.

The woman was not seriously injured but was in shock, Ambulance Victoria said.

Police are calling for witnesses to ascertain whether there was a signal fault.

Thirty-eight passengers were on the train but none were hurt.

The rail line has been closed for the night.
