A teenager is dead after his vehicle left the road and smashed into a tree in Victoria's west on Saturday morning.

Police say the man lost control of the vehicle just before 6am (AEST) at Port Fairy and died at the scene.

He was the sole occupant of the vehicle and his next of kin were yet to be notified.

A number of traffic diversions were expected to remain in place all morning.

The death brings the state's provisional road toll to 163 compared to 193 this time last year.
