A teenager who stabbed another girl in the neck at a Melbourne shopping centre has admitted she intended to hurt the girl.

Her 16-year-old victim was found bleeding on a footpath outside Fountain Gate Shopping Centre on June 5 and needed emergency surgery.

On Monday the accused girl, who is also 16, appeared in a children's court where she had been due to face a contested committal hearing on an attempted murder charge.

Instead the charge was downgraded and she pleaded guilty to intentionally causing serious injury in circumstances of gross violence.

Four other charges were dropped.

The teen will face a sentencing hearing on December 22.

The victim's mother and sister attended the hearing.
