Melbourne train commuters have been spared the prospect of further industrial action after Metro Trains and the Rail, Tram and Bus Union struck a deal following a long-running pay dispute.

The train operator and union struck an in-principle deal on Wednesday for a new enterprise agreement.

Union secretary Luba Grigorovitch said the agreement was a victory for her members.

A series of four-hour train stoppages disrupted Melbourne suburban rail services in September.
