Smoking will be banned on all Victorian railway station platforms and raised tram stops from early next year.
Smoking is already banned in covered areas of train platforms and within tram and bus shelters, but the ban will be extended.
Adults smoking in banned areas will be fined $212, while there will be a $72 fine for children.
Public Transport Minister Terry Mulder says the government is considering even wider smoking bans in public transport areas.
In 2012-13, 2002 people were issued with infringement notices for public transport related smoking offences.
