Victorian John Hastings has returned from his unusual shoulder injury for the Bushrangers' Sheffield Shield match against South Australia at the MCG.

Hastings was named in the 12-man squad for the match from Sunday.

Victoria are top after four games and SA are second with two wins apiece.

The Bushrangers also have two draws, while the Redbacks have lost twice.

It will be the last match for the two teams before the Shield breaks for the Big Bash League.

Hastings has missed Victoria's past three games after hurting his shoulder while batting.

He will replace comeback paceman James Pattinson, who is in the Australian squad for the first Test against the West Indies.

Victorian chairman of selectors Andrew Lynch said Hastings was in great form until last month's injury.

"With Pattinson and (Peter) Siddle out, Hastings' return is good timing and we look forward to him leading the attack," he said.

Scott Boland has been on standby as the Test squad copes with a rash of fast bowler injuries, but he is also in the Victorian line-up for the SA game.

Boland shot into Test squad calculations with 7-31 in Victoria's last game against Western Australia.

"Cricket Australia want Boland to play, so he will not travel down to Hobart and he will play with us," Lynch said.

"Boland has been impressive for a long time - he is our best one-day bowler with Jon Holland over the past three years and that has now translated to Shield.

"A lot of people were talking about how fast he was bowling last weekend in Perth - as quick, if not quicker, than Pattinson."
