The worst of Victoria's wild weather is over as a bitter cold front moves on.

The state felt the full force of icy and windy conditions on Tuesday and Wednesday, with snow falling in low lying areas and winds damaging homes and cutting power to thousands.

The Bureau of Meteorology says conditions are improving as the cold front leaves the east coast of Australia.

"Winds are easing, some showers still occurring but a lot of that cold air has gone away," duty forecaster Beren Bradshaw told AAP on Wednesday.

The SES had responded to about 1500 requests for help since the wild weather hit on Tuesday, with most call-outs relating to fallen trees.

Paramedics had to treat a man who was injured when his car rolled after hitting black ice near Wonthaggi, while two people were injured when their cars struck fallen trees in Nar Nar Goon and Koetong.

Thousands were left without power early on Wednesday because of broken powerlines, but most had power restored by the end of the day.

Snow fell in the northwest of the state, including Ballarat and Mount Macedon as temperatures dipped close to zero on Wednesday.

Although the BoM has gale warnings for the Gippsland coast on Thursday, the weather is set to improve over the next few days.

Temperatures are expected to reach the high teens over the weekend before another cold front moves in.

"This next front coming through isn't as cold as this one that has just gone through," Ms Bradshaw said.

"We won't see that much of a decrease in temperatures but it is expected to get windy from Sunday into Monday onwards."
