Victoria escapes 'bad fire day'

Victorian firefighters poised for a "bad fire day" can breathe a sigh of relief after total fire bans helped minimise the risk of major blazes.

Victoria has survived what was expected to be "a bad fire day" without any major blazes.

The Country Fire Authority had been "poised for a bad fire day" on Thursday with 32 water-bombing aircraft strategically placed around the state as temperatures soared above 40C in the state's north and west.

The hot conditions prompted an extreme fire danger warning for the Mallee and a severe warning for the Wimmera, Northern Country and North Central districts.

A total fire ban in place for the Wimmera, North Country and North Central fire regions is due to end at midnight.

Mallee's total fire ban will continue on Friday.
