Victoria, federal coalition mint NDIS deal

The Victorian Labor government and federal coalition have struck a deal confirming how they will pay for the National Disability Insurance Scheme in the state.

Victorians have been told they can now rest assured they will have access to the National Disability Insurance Scheme for years to come.

The state has become the fifth to mint a long-term deal with the federal government over the scheme, locking in funding and other arrangements.

The development comes after a testy negotiation process, with Victorian Treasurer Tim Pallas accusing Scott Morrison's government just two months ago of "hoarding" money from the NDIS to prop up its bottom line.

Under the finalised agreement, which will come into effect at the start of July, Victoria will pay $2.59 billion for the scheme this year and the same again annually - taking into account inflation - until at least mid-2023.

The federal government will pay the remaining balance of NDIS costs and give Victoria access to $2.4 billion in payments from a fund designed to reimburse government's for the scheme's expenditure.

Western Australia is expected to sign up to the scheme in full by 2020, while negotiations are continuing with Queensland.

"We are taking the time to make sure the NDIS transition is a smooth one," Social Services Minister Anne Ruston said.
